Artist's Statement

A Statement on the Art

The task given to a contemporary artist of any medium (whether it be music, acting, writing, painting, sculpture, etc.) is to find a creative way to convey or define the passions and/or concerns that provoke thoughts of innovation; to inspire the emotions that lead to movement or understanding of ourselves and others.

The exchange between us should be revolving… endless.  That is how we come to be open-minded and have insight into who we are and what treasures strangers may hold. The point could be made that we are connected invariably with a common thread. We have all cried as children and we have all hurt as adults. Something has made us laugh honestly and someone has left us in some way or another. We have all told a lie, so it only makes sense that we have been lied to at some point.  Our expressions and body language can be guarded and secretive with effort, but when that fails there is a moment of truth without definitions. Every once in a while there is a glimpse of that common thread in an involuntary expression or forced expression, with no promise of answers… just pieces to a puzzle that fits together differently for each person. Confusion is a precursor for questions and questions are the beginning of verses in memories and regressions… verses of lessons learned. So it begins.

This series of portraits is intended to capture the moment of innovation that humans contribute to the whole; to convey the importance of the instant of an action of retribution, grievance, confusion, joy, frustration or detachment, or simply the moment of thought. The intention is to convey the canvassing energy on a street corner or within the privacy of a personal sanctuary in a way that can be interpretative and relative to the individual viewer.
